The stove
In 1956, Earl Nightingale recorded a talk called The Strangest Secret. In it he describes a man standing in front of a cold stove, saying to it:
“Give me heat and then I’ll add the wood.”
His answer is plain:
“We’ve got to put the fuel in before we can expect heat.”
And he names what goes wrong when we forget it: “This is what causes those who keep looking for something for nothing, or a free ride, to fail in life.”
Crew or cargo
Nightingale liked to picture a ship leaving harbour with its voyage mapped out, where “the captain and crew know exactly where it’s going.” Every ship carries two kinds of people. The crew set the sails, stand the watch, and keep the lamps lit through the night. The cargo is carried. The ship needs both; the cargo is the reason it sails at all. But only the crew make it move.
Somewhere along the way, most people drift into one or the other without deciding. A few decide.
The hen
There’s an old story about a hen who planted the grain, tended it, harvested it, and baked the bread — and found plenty of takers at the table and none in the field. This is the field.
Lantern Post is the lamp. If you’d like to be one of the few who keeps it lit — the crew — you are welcome aboard, and thank you. If not, walk home under the light anyway. The bread is still yours; it was always going to be.
